Dr. Robert Oakes, cardiothoracic surgeon with Bryan Heart, and Bryan employees Vic Grdina, perfusionist and Sheryl Sanders, RN are back from an amazing journey. They were part of the Team Heart mission to provide heart surgery to Rwandan people who don’t have access to this level of care. The team reports the trip was a huge team effort and success that included:
• 16 cardiac surgeries for very sick and very young patients
• Tropical storms and power outages
• Transporting patients from the OR to the ICU
under umbrellas
• Celebrating how well all our patients did and their
great progress
• Working from 6:30 am to midnight or later
• Enjoying the local culture and making new friends
• Looking forward to seeing our patients again next
February when we return…God willing.
